The Town Supervisor fills a significant role, serving in several major capacities.
The Town Supervisor is the Chief Executive Officer of the Town, similar to a city mayor. He/she is an elected official, serving a four-year term. The Supervisor sits as the presiding member of the Town Board, an elected body of four councilpersons who, along with the Supervisor, are responsible for the adoption of the annual budget, and for the adoption, enforcement and execution of all legislative actions of the Board.
The Supervisor also serves as the budget officer unless he/she appoints an individual who must be an elector of the Town. The appointed individual may be any town officer or employee, except a member of the Town Board (Town Law, Sections 23 and 103[2]). The budget officer is responsible for the preparation of the tentative budget with recommendations for the Town Board.
The Supervisor manages and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Town government and often carries out the decisions of the Town Board. He/she usually receives the majority of complaints and suggestions of citizens as well.
